Dear Upcoming Fifth Grader,
In this letter you will find things that will happen and what you need to pay attention to in fifth grade. You must listen to what your teacher says and make sure to study for tests. Also, don’t forget to try not to get in trouble. If you do, the teachers will be upset and tell you to go outside. In Ms. Zhou’s class, you cannot talk at all, or else you will get your name written on the whiteboard. You must also review for finals because you're in fifth grade now. Studying for finals is not hard if you already pay attention in class. Finishing your homework in fifth grade is very important. Also, be on time to every class.
During P.E. time, you will have to change, so be ready. Fifth grade is also when you start to rotate to different classes. There will be more writing projects like the autobiography about yourself, or the state project where you pick a state when a teacher picks your number out of a cup. You will be reading two books in fifth grade. They are called, Dave at Night and The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
For me, the best part of fifth grade is getting to go to San Francisco and Sacramento. The trip lasts for two days. Ms. Wampler will be in charge, and Ms. Nelson will go too. You will get to go on an airplane to Sacramento. Once you land in Sacramento, you will board a bus. On the bus, the girls are on one side and the boys are on the other side. There will be two buses. You get to sleep in a hotel room with your friends if you get picked to be together. For the rooms, the girls and the boys are separated. The maximum number of students in a room is four. There is something called strikes. You get a strike if you don’t follow the rules. If you get three, you are out. This means you must go home.
On the trip you will get to go to the Capitol Building, two museums, and pier 39. In the Capitol Building you will see all the rooms where the legislators work. Those are the people who are in charge of making the law of our state. The first museum you will get to go to is the Railroad Museum. This is where you see giant railroad trains and go inside them. In the next museum, which is called the Exploratorium, you get to do hands-on experiments. This museum has six floors. The last place you will visit is Pier 39. You will eat at the Hard Rock Cafe and Bubba Gump. After you are done eating, you will get time to explore the pier and buy souvenirs with your group. We were given only one hour to explore six floors. I did not get to see everything that I wanted. As soon as we left the museum, we boarded a bus and headed for the airport.
Overall, fifth grade for me was a big change because you had to get used to rotating to different classes. We also had to study for more tests. But I loved how we got to go to San Francisco and Sacramento. Don’t worry about not being successful in fifth grade. It’s going to be a great year.
